Sunday night, the leftover coffee was poured on the fire and the wagon tongue was swung toward the North Star.  Emotions of regret, that such a wonderful weekend had come to an end, prevailed among the audience as they left.

As usual, Old West Days left spectators from all over the Midwest feeling proud and encouraged to be a part of the great Western Heritage.  Once again the weekend was packed chuck-full of the perfect blend of music, storytelling and western poetry.

From Friday morning right after chuck, till Sunday night just before the second guard was called, there was continuous entertainment from troubadours and balladeers that came from all points of the country.  Even late at night, the nighthawks could edge their ponies closer as the talent continued at the jam sessions.

The Trade Show was a perpetual hub of activity where folks could buy, trade and yearn for countless needs and fixin's.  Centered by a beautiful display of handmade quilts and bordered by an amazing array of artwork and western trappings that fascinated young and old alike.  The bargains and treasures continued as Main Street Valentine swung open their doors with Old West specials and the true hospitality found in Cherry County.

The Saturday afternoon parade herded spectators together to regroup, relax and enjoy the nostalgia and fascination of an old time Western Parade.  Like reaching the knot on a long rope, no one wanted to let go.  On Sunday morning, the cowboy breakfast and church services were followed by the scenic trail ride down through the fall splendor of the Niobrara River Valley.  Sunday evening ended with the final performance of the Old West Melodrama.  The rollicking antics of the Valentine Players brought the weekend to a close with cheers and laughter.

Finally, with emotions high and with farewells to old friends and good times, children were gathered, dogs were whistled in and folks hooked up to head home.  But everyone left inspired and renewed feeling proud to be ranchers, cowboys and Americans!  And also wondering what this Nebraska Sandhill community has in store for next year.
